Workers from Hardy Associates Ltd, a readymade garment factory, blocked the Chandra-Nabinagar highway in Gazipur on Thursday, demanding the payment of their arrear wages for the past two months. The protest caused significant disruption to traffic, although alternative routes allowed vehicles to continue operating between Dhaka and northern districts.
The agitated workers claimed that the factory authorities had repeatedly promised to settle their unpaid wages but failed to follow through. The situation escalated after the factory was abruptly closed on 23d December, leaving workers with no recourse but to take to the streets in search of justice.
Md Mizanur Rahman, Superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police, reported that efforts were underway to clear the highway and restore normal traffic flow. He attributed the unrest to the negligence of factory management, stating that unmet commitments had driven workers to protest.
