Subsequent to health experts apprehending a probable second wave of the dreaded coronavirus pandemic in Bangladesh this winter, the apex garment makers’ body, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has asked readymade garment manufacturing units to make all necessary preparations to tackle the same.
The apex garment makers’ body on 5 October had written to its member units – there are more than 4,000 member factories with nearly 40 lakh employments under the BGMEA and nearly 2,300 of them export readymade garment products directly – warning them that a second wave of COVID-19 could hit Bangladesh during the upcoming winter season while calling upon them to take precautions against the same.
It may be mentioned here that on 20 September, the National Technical Advisory Committee on COVID -19 advised the Government to make all necessary preparations as it feared there could be a surge in coronavirus cases during the winter following which Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 22 September during the weekly cabinet meeting asked all concerned ministries to make all necessary precautions.
Close on heels the Prime Minister calling upon the concerned ministries to take necessary steps in the weekly cabinet meeting, BGMEA issued a letter in this direction to the member units while asking them to inform it or its health in-charge, through the hotline, in case anyone (workers, employees and officers) is found infected with COVID-19 in their respective units.
