Bangladesh’s apex garment makers’ body- the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) – is keen on importing scrapped apparel from overseas to make recycled apparel from those as demand for such apparel products is rising globally.
Addressing a press meet recently at the successful conclusion of the ‘Made in Bangladesh Week’ in Dhaka, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan reportedly said Bangladesh exports jhoot (scrapped) clothes while adding that time has now come to import scrapped clothes to make garments from them in order to save the environment.
It may be mentioned here that Bangladesh is the second largest apparel exporter globally even if it ships huge amount of scrapped clothing items through informal channels as they are not used by local manufacturers to a large extent.
