As the so-called green wave continues to sweep Bangladesh, the country has become home to the highest number of green garment factories in the world.
Media reports maintained this citing the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), as per which, even a few months ago, the number of green buildings was 144, but this month the tally touched 150 with the last one’s inclusion in the list on 7 October, which made Bangladesh the country with the highest number of Leadership in Environmental and Energy in Design or LEED-certified green garment factories in the globe, given by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
While around 500 more garment factories are waiting to be LEED certified by the USGBC, of the existing 150 green units, 93 are gold rated, 44 are platinum rated, 9 are silver rated and four are just certified even if nine of the top 10 green garment factories and 40 of the top 100 are located in the country (Bangladesh).
