The current committee of Bangladesh’s apparel makers, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association (BGMEA), headed by Siddiqur Rahman has received a year’s extension.
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Commerce took the decision on January 29, 2017, against a backdrop of the BGMEA preparing for a much-debated election.
This is the second time that the current committee has received an extension after it received a six-month stay following the expiration of its term back on September 21, 2017. The election was supposed to be held in March this year.
Insiders say that BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman urged for another extension to the Commerce Ministry. After getting the approval of the Ministry, he forwarded a letter to BGMEA’s Election Board Chairman Jahangir Alamin, requesting him to drop all preparations for the next BGMEA election.
The BGMEA President told the media that the move was made in the purview of “a lot of circumstances” including the association’s new office construction in Uttara, New Wage Board for workers and the upcoming parliamentary election of Bangladesh.
Earlier, it was reported that a new group of members – Swadhinata Parishad (Independence Association) – has come up to contest in the election with an objective to make sure that the leaders of BGMEA do not select on the crotchet of a dominant fraction.
