As Eid-ul-Fitr approaches, wholesale and retail markets in Old Dhaka are witnessing a surge in activity. Traders flock to bustling wholesale hubs like Bangla Bazar, Chawkbazar, and Sadarghat, with popular spots such as Sharif Market and East Bengal Super Market serving as key centers for retailers, especially for apparel and garment pieces for the festive season.
Retailers are capitalising on competitive prices, sourcing goods to supply various regions across the country. Despite overall optimism, some sellers report mixed results. In addition to wholesale activity, retail businesses in areas like Lakshmibazar are thriving, with shoppers eagerly purchasing kurtas, sarees, and footwear. Monir Hossain, a garment businessman, remarked on the increased demand for both Indian and Pakistani kurtas alongside local fabrics.
While prices have risen compared to last year, many shoppers remain determined to find good deals, underscoring the vibrant market atmosphere as Eid draws near.
