Notwithstanding the significant growth that e-commerce sector in Bangladesh witnessed, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, there still remains a host of bottlenecks including internet and logistic barriers, fraud sellers and customers’ mindset, policy and infrastructure, underlined industry insiders while adding that even if e-commerce and digital economy has the potential for employment and income generation, the sector needs specific guidelines for doing fair business.

The e-commerce market is about Taka 312 crore, reportedly, stated the President of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services Syed Almas Kabir, speaking to the media, adding that the e-commerce business has experienced a significant 166 per cent growth in 2020 subsequent to the consumers moving online for their shopping requirements on account of the COVID-19 pandemic even if Shayantani Twisha, the Daraz Bangladesh head of PR, media and communications, maintained that infrastructure (internet and logistic barriers), customer mindset, policy, fraud sellers, etc., are the main challenges for the sector.
Underlining the need for a standard operating procedure (SOP) to ensure the growth of the e-commerce business, the experts also maintained that a specific guideline is needed for the sake of both consumers and companies, which would harmonise the growth of the sector in a manner which is fair to all sides.
