Following reports of anomalies and alleged forgery and misappropriation of clients’ money by some e-commerce firms, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave directives at a cabinet meeting recently as per which all e-commerce businesses will have to register with the Commerce Ministry within the next two months even as they will also have to deposit a security amount in the central bank, Bangladesh Bank.
Briefing the media after the cabinet meeting, Khandker Anwarul Islam, who is the Cabinet Secretary, reportedly, maintained that under a precise programme, e-commerce businesses will have to register with the Commerce Ministry within the next two months while also adding they would have to deposit a security amount in the central bank so that the clients can be paid from it if anything happens.
Further underlining that the Government will not take any responsibility if anyone makes transactions with unregistered e-commerce entities, Khandker Anwarul Islam, reportedly, added that directives have also been given to conduct mass campaigns to make people aware of not making any transactions with unauthorised e-commerce companies even as he went on to state list of registered e-commerce firms will also be published.
