In a public meeting held at Hemayetpur Leather Industry City the Tannery Workers Union emphasised the urgent need for the implementation of the minimum wage as announced by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Union leaders expressed their concerns over the continued delay in enforcing this wage, which they argue is essential for the well-being of tannery workers.
The meeting was presided over by Union President Abul Kalam Azad, who criticised the lag in wage implementation, highlighting that while owners have recommended a minimum wage, the actual enforcement has yet to be realised. Azad urged factory owners to act swiftly to avoid any potential unrest, underscoring that the stability of the tannery industry is vital for the broader economic development of the country.
Senior Vice President Hadiul Islam, General Secretary Abdul Malek, Organising Secretary Abdur Rahim, Publicity Secretary Md Shahid, and Labour Law Affairs Secretary Md Mamun Mia were also present at the meeting, addressing the pressing issues faced by workers in the sector.
Abdul Malek raised alarms about the lack of labour certificates, inadequate personal protective equipment, and poor chemical management in most factories. He reported that many skilled workers have already been dismissed without receiving fair compensation. Malek warned that if these challenges are not addressed promptly, securing LWG certification for the industry will become increasingly difficult.
