In partnership with the Switzerland Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SBCCI), bluesign® launched the “Digital Product Passport (DPP) & bluesign® Roadmap” in Dhaka on Monday.
The “Road to DPP” was presented during the occasion by Daniel Rüfenacht, CEO of bluesign®, along with bluesign® global and local leadership. The event was hosted by bluesign®’s Md. Shahan Reza, Country Manager, Bangladesh and Regional Director Katharina Verena Mayer, following the keynote address.
In addition, members from SBCCI, Switzerland embassy members, representatives from global brands, and textile and apparel industry people were present.
“Previously, the fashion industry stakeholders had a habit of pushing the sustainability topic to others shoulder,” Daniel Rüfenacht stated in the “Road to DPP” presentation. As of right now, the European Union (EU) is going to put new laws into effect that would mandate that, by 2024, almost every goods sold within the union have a digital product passport (DPP).
“Additionally, this creative project seeks to provide “traceable and verifiable data” on the environmental and social effect of clothes produced in Bangladesh to stakeholders across the clothing supply chain, as the country is the second largest exporter of ready-made garments (RMG),” he added.
At the event, the CEO of bluesign® emphasised that the DPP serves as a digital record and would capture important details including the source of ingredients, processing techniques, and chemical usage throughout production.
bluesign® leaders highlighted that this collaboration between bluesign® and SBCCI is expected to positively impact Bangladesh’s textile industry, nurturing a more responsible and transparent production environment.
It provides producers a platform to demonstrate their dedication to sustainability and gives consumers and brands ‘more confidence’ in the ethical and environmentally responsible origin of their clothing.
Manufacturers will receive an In-Depth Annual Impact Report as one of the benefits. Gaining a comprehensive understanding of production processes will be facilitated by this, as it will provide an analysis of resource consumption (energy, water, chemicals), as well as emission data that includes the carbon footprint.
Moreover, the Roadmap will maximise efficiency and cut costs. bluesign® identifies improvement opportunities in factory facilities, providing resource-saving guidance that not only enhances sustainability but also leads to significant cost savings.
Safer chemical substitutes will also guarantee that mills have a Chemical Inventory List (CIL) examined by Bluesign® specialists to find safer, more environmentally friendly substitutes for dangerous chemicals.
