Faruque Hassan, who is the President of the BGMEA, has maintained that the UK-based non-resident Bangladeshis could play a significant role in shaping the financial, social and economic conditions of Bangladesh in the post-LDC period even as he called upon UK Parliament members Rushanara Ali and Rupa Huq and other British politicians of Bangladeshi origin, to extend their support towards ensuring continuation of duty-free benefit for Bangladesh to UK after its graduation.
Media reports mentioned this adding the BGMEA chair came up with this observation at a recent meeting with Rushanara and Rupa, in which were also present other British politicians of Bangladeshi origin even as they discussed various issues, including cooperation between Bangladesh and the UK regarding Bangladesh’s LDC graduation, possible changes in the tariff regime and how Bangladesh could retain its duty-free access to the UK market post the transition.
The BGMEA President further, reportedly, underlined the need for greater engagement of non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) in the development of Bangladesh, while adding a good number of NRBs living in the UK are well-established businesspersons while many have influential positions in Governments as politicians and members of parliaments even if many are academicians, researchers, high Government officials and hold other prestigious positions.
