The United States Green Building Council or USGBC, in recognition of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association’s (BGMEA) strides towards making the local apparel industry eco-friendly, has awarded the garment makers’ body (BGMEA) the prestigious “USGBC Leadership Award.”
Addressing a virtual press meet from the BGMEA’s Dhaka based office recently, President of the trade body, Faruque Hassan, maintained that this was first USGBC leadership award for any organisation globally.
It may be mentioned here that at present Bangladesh has 143 LEED or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified garment manufacturing units — of them, 41 are platinum-rated, 89 gold-rated and the rest are silver and only LEED-certified — which makes the country with the highest number of green garment factories in the world even if Bangladesh also boasts of being home to nine of the top 10 LEED-certified buildings.
Meanwhile, while interacting with the media the BGMEA President, reportedly, maintained that another 500 apparel manufacturing units are also set to be certified by the USGBC.
