Bangladesh and India are not just two neighbouring countries. Bangladesh shares close cultural and business ties with India accounting for a substantial share of raw materials required by industries in Bangladesh, including raw cotton for the readymade garment sector of Bangladesh.
Also, of late, India has emerged as a major export destination for apparel items made in Bangladesh.
In view of the same, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) has called upon India to allow increased access of Bangladeshi products including readymade garments, light engineering, agro-processing, amongst others while identifying value-addition in business to enable the development of both the nations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Participating in virtual discussion on emerging business, investment opportunities and the underlying challenges of bilateral trade between the two countries during the pandemic, held recently, FBCCI President Sheikh Fazle Fahim made these observations.
The FBCCI President said that the FBCCI looks forward to closely working with its Indian counterparts and sought India’s support in recovering from the crisis while also addressing the new challenges that coronavirus pandemic has brought in its wake.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organised the discussion participated by Union State Minister of External Affair of India V Muraleedharan, Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Md Sirazul Islam, President of India Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry Abdul Matlub Ahmad, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das, amongst others.
