The much talked about issue of who will be the next chief of Bangladesh’s apex garment makers body – Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) – seems to have been sorted out after the factions within the traders’ body reportedly reached a consensus to this end.
If media reports are something to go by, Rubana Huq, Managing Director, Mohammadi Group, is likely to be the next and first female president of BGMEA after the two factions of BGMEA – Sammilita Parishad and Forum – reportedly nominated Rubana as the head of its panel in line with the negotiations.
“In line with the previous consensus, we have submitted nomination papers under Sammilita Parishad and Forum panels, where Rubana Haq is the panel leader,” reportedly stated former BGMEA President Anwar-ul Alam Chowdhury Parvez speaking to a news daily, adding, “If there is another panel, there will be an election. Otherwise, Rubana Haq will be the President for the next two years.”
It may be mentioned here that the BGMEA election for 2019-22 is slated to be held on April 6 this year.
As per reports, total of 59 apparel makers have submitted nomination papers to contest 35 director posts in the biennial election.
A total of 23 people placed nominations from Forum (of which 18 are from Dhaka zone and five from Chittagong zone) while 17 reportedly submitted nominations under Sammilita Parishad (of which 12 are from Dhaka and five from Chittagong).
Further, 18 people reportedly submitted nominations from the Shadhinata Parishad platform.
