The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has introduced an automated mechanism to directly credit income tax paid at the import stage to taxpayers’ electronic returns, in a move aimed at simplifying return filing and eliminating long-standing difficulties faced by importing businesses.
The system has been launched following the successful integration of the ASYCUDA World customs platform with the NBR’s e-return system, the revenue authority said in a press release issued on Monday.
Under the new arrangement, taxpayers engaged in imports will automatically receive bill-of-entry-wise details of advance income tax paid during the relevant income year when entering business income information in their e-returns. The import-stage tax will be adjusted against the total income tax liability, allowing the system to calculate the net payable amount automatically.
The NBR said the initiative is expected to significantly ease the e-return filing process for importers, while ensuring more accurate and timely adjustment of tax credits.
The update comes amid rising adoption of the online return system. Since the formal launch of e-return filing for the 2025–26 tax year on 4th August 2025, more than 4.6 million taxpayers have registered on the platform, with nearly 3.3 million returns already submitted.
The revenue authority noted that a growing number of taxpayers, including those not legally required to file returns online, are voluntarily using the e-return system. Expatriate Bangladeshis have also been included in the facility this year, with around 4,000 overseas taxpayers having already filed their returns online for the current tax year.
The NBR reiterated that no supporting documents are required to be uploaded when submitting returns electronically and said it would continue efforts to enable individual taxpayers to pay income tax and file returns conveniently from home.
The board has urged all individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns online through the e-return system by 31st January 2026.
