
Way short to its target, overall export of textile and clothing (include those of jute, coir, handicrafts and handloom items) exports grew just 1.7 per cent during the April-February of FY 2015. On the flip side, import in same period increased by 14.2 per cent. According to the latest official data of DGCIS (Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics), in this period, garment export category saw the maximum growth of 13.4 per cent compare to FY14. While textiles increased only 0.4 per cent, handicraft grew by 6.6 per cent, handloom decreased by -0.9, jute & products decreased -5.5 per cent. Fibres were the biggest looser with -36.4 per cent.
The Government had initially set the export target at US $ 45 billion for 2014-15, compared with the actual exports of US $ 39.3 billion in the last fiscal. According to the provisional data, the overall textile and garment exports touched US $ 35.29 billion mark during the April-February period, compared with US $ 34.72 billion a year before.
