The container handling by Bangladesh’s premier port, Chittagong Port, decreased by 67,787 TEUs in February year-on-year.
This is as per reports, which added this was due to declining imports following the dollar crisis even as according to the data from Chittagong Port, import, export and empty container handling in February was 1,68,074 TEUs of containers, which in February 2022 was 2,35,861 TEUS, of which 77,841 TEUS were import containers, 23,884 TEUs export containers and 56,224 TEUs empty containers.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, CEO of Saif Maritime, Abdullah Jahir, reportedly observed there was a slowdown in global trade due to the Russia-Ukraine war while also adding that due to the dollar crisis, the Government had restricted the import of goods, resulting in a decline in imports of luxury goods, even as imports have continued to decline from mid-2022.
It may be mentioned here that around 92 per cent of Bangladesh’s import and export trade is done through Chittagong Port even if about 98 per cent of the cargo containers transported through all the seaports of Bangladesh are transported through this seaport.
