The move to digitise workers’ salary disbursement that has recently gained momentum in the Bangladesh readymade garment industry came in for praise from the Executive Directors of the World Bank Group (WBG) who have expressed their satisfaction over the ongoing process and its impact towards women empowerment.
“We have seen massive changes in the RMG sector of Bangladesh. Previously, factories used to pay through cash or a bank which was troublesome and time consuming. Because of the largest distribution network of bKash, Bangladeshi RMG factories are becoming more dynamic with its wage digitisation solution,” opined WBG Executive Director Patrizio Pagano, who along with other Executive Directors of WBG recently visited the Newage Group’s Ashulia RMG factory to observe how the bKash payroll digitisation is positively impacting RMG workers’ life.
The Executive Directors also explored existing facilities for workers, bKash awareness session in RMG factories on secure utilisation of mobile wallet and also interacted with the workers.
There was also an open dialogue where the EDs exchanged views with the high officials of bKash and Newage Group.
It may be mentioned here that currently, 350,000 garment workers of 280 RMG factories are getting their salary through bKash.
