
Thanks to growing consumption of the middle-class, coupled with production of diversified fabrics, the local textile market in Bangladesh is growing at a faster pace, to double to US$ 9 billion in a span of five years.
Media reports mentioned this adding five years ago, the sales were worth around US $ 5 billion only.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, President of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) Mohammad Ali Khokon, reportedly, maintained for a male consumer, 15 metre textile consumption per year previously, has gone up to 25 metres now even if for a woman customer, consumption has increased by 10 metres to 40 metres of fabrics a year from what was 30 metres five years ago, which again went up from 15 metres previously.
“…rising middle-income groups are fuelling the growth of the fabrics made for the local markets,” reportedly, stated the BTMA President even as according to Chief Operating Officer of BTMA Monsoor Ahmed, at present, 1,200 dyeing mills, 300 spinning mills and more than 10,000 small, medium and large weaving units are producing textile and fabrics to meet the local demand.
