Notwithstanding a series of measures, including import restrictions, have been taken by Bangladesh since April 2022 in the wake of the dollar shortage even if the foreign currency crunch continues to hurt overall economic activities owing to unlawful transactions (hundi and over-invoicing) that lead to capital flights and money laundering.
As per reports, this was underlined by some economists.
Meanwhile, former Bangladesh Bank Governor Salehuddin Ahmed reportedly maintained notwithstanding fall in import payment the shortage of dollars is there still even as he went on to underlined the dollar crunch will persist unless over-invoicing and hundi can be checked.
“The Government should check over-invoicing immediately,” cautioned Salehuddin Ahmed even as Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit reported a 62.33 per cent increase in suspicious transactions and activities related to money laundering in the financial year 2021–22 over the previous financial year while the economists referring to the data released by local and international agencies on illegal assets possessed Bangladeshi citizens overseas, said economy has long been bleeding from both the economic menaces.
