The countrywide shutdown enforced by the Government due to rapid spread of Coronavirus has rendered garment manufacturing units to shut shops, while some are reportedly planning to continue operation in a limited manner that may not require all the workers.
This in tandem with the alleged work order cancellations by the buyers has given rise to fears of workers being laid off.
Keeping the same in consideration, the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) has called upon the apparel exporters to refrain from laying off workers, more so in the light of Government’s massive stimulus package to pay the workers’ wages.
With the holy month of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr looming large, any dismissal now will make it very difficult for workers to lead their lives while aggravating the crisis wrought by the Coronavirus outbreak which might be difficult to handle in future, maintained Inspector General of DIFE, Shibnath Roy in a letter written to the concerned stakeholder, adding that in view of the overall situation, factory owners are sincerely requested to stop cutting their workforce.
