Owners of garment manufacturing units in Bangladesh have been asked to disburse workers’ festival bonus by 27 July and half of the current month’s salary by 30 July while the rest of the salary should be paid by first week of the coming month.
State Minister for Labour and Employment, Begum Monnujan Sufian, underlined this Monday during a tripartite meeting where a decision was taken in this direction.
The decision has been taken in light of the upcoming festival of Eid-ul-Azha, which is expected to be celebrated either on 31 July or 1 August depending on the sighting of the moon.
The Minister also reportedly called upon factory owners not to lay off workers while requesting the workers to refrain from travelling and stay at their respective places of work to prevent further spreading of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Monday’s tripartite meeting was presided over by the State Minister for Labour and Employment and attended by the President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Dr. Rubana Huq; Sramik leaders, Advocate Delwar Hossain and Kamrul Islam; President of Jatiya Sramik League, Fazlul Haque Mantu, among others.
