A new container yard has started operating at Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port — as per reports, New Mooring Overflow Container Yard started its journey recently — which will, reportedly, increase the port’s container capacity from 49,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to 53,000 TEUs as the yard can accommodate 4,000 TEUs of containers.
Media reports maintained this citing the concerned port officials.
Speaking to the media, Secretary of Chittagong Port Omar Faruk, reportedly, stated the port’s capacity is increasing through the implementation of various projects while adding the port can now hold more than 50,000 TEUs of containers even if reports suggest the foundation stone of the New Mooring Overflow Container Yard was laid in 2016 while underlining the yard, which spreads over 34 acres of land, was constructed in two phases, at a cost of around Taka 175 crore.
