The construction of the third terminal at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport— the new terminal is set to more than double the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity, while also increase cargo capacity from 200,000 tonnes to 500,000 tonnes — is expected to significantly contribute towards boosting Bangladesh’s trade.
Media reports maintained this adding the three-storey terminal building is being built on an area of 542,000 square metres, with a floor space of 230,000 square metres while underlining the export cargo complex with an area of 36,000 square metres will have a capacity of 546,941 tonnes annually even if with 27,000 square metres, the import cargo complex will have capacity of 273,470 tonnes per year.
Recently, Project Director of the third terminal AKM Maksudul Islam briefed a delegation of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) — the delegation, reportedly, included BGMEA President Faruque Hassan; Vice-Presidents Miran Ali and Shahidullah Azim, Director Asif Ashraf and former Director Ashikur Rahman (Tuhin) — about the features and amenities of the new terminal during their visit.
Also present on the occasion were high-rung officials of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).
