Amidst rising apprehensions amongst the garment manufacturers of Bangladesh – who are dependent on China to a great extent for the raw materials – on the probable fallout of the outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus outbreak in China, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi underlined that there is no problem right now in terms of export-import activities between Bangladesh and China, including the import of raw materials for RMG sector.
He also assured the industry that the Government will take necessary steps after assessing the possible impacts of Coronavirus while adding in case the existing situation in China prolongs, they need to think about it.
It may be mentioned here that many in the country’s flourishing readymade garment sector are worried over the probable impact that breakout of Coronavirus in China might have on Bangladesh’s apparel sector.
“It will definitely have a big impact on the global supply chain and we are not out of it,” underlined Director at Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Sharif Zahir speaking to the media earlier, adding “The Coronavirus outbreak has created an uncertainty. Manufacturing factories are closed, the Chinese Government has extended the Lunar New Year holiday and we don’t know when everything will be fully operational.”
