The president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Faruque Hassan, sought assistance from the Embassy to foster bilateral investment and trade, focusing on luring Italian capital into Bangladesh’s lucrative industrial sectors.
Faruque made the call when he paid a courtesy call to Monirul Islam, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Italy, at the Embassy in Rome.
According to a press release, embassy officials including Economic Counsellor Md. Al Amin and First Secretary (Labour) Ashif Anam Siddique were also present at the meeting.
The main topic of discussion was the substantial trade and investment potential that exist between Bangladesh and Italy, with an emphasis on growing Bangladeshi exports of clothing, particularly high-end designer items, to Italy.
Faruque gave a summary of the present situation, potential, and future direction of the Bangladeshi garment sector.
He emphasised how the sector is starting to produce more high-end items than basic ones, especially fashion pieces made of technology textiles and man-made fibres.
Since the demand for high-end garments is significant in the Italian market, there is a considerable opportunity for Bangladesh to export such goods to Italy.
The BGMEA president emphasised the potential investment sectors for Italian investors, including non-cotton textiles, food and agro-processing, IT, light engineering, leather and shipbuilding.
He also requested the embassy’s assistance in attracting Italian apparel buyers who do not source from Bangladesh.
Highlighting the direct flight between Dhaka and Rome, Faruque emphasised its significance in enhancing business communication.
He urged the envoy to streamline consular services and simplify the visa-obtaining process for businessmen, intending to foster increased business interactions.
To improve the abilities of BUFT students, Faruque also pleaded with Ambassador Monirul to support cooperation between BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) and fashion schools in Italy.
