Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, who is also a former President of the apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has tested positive for coronavirus, claimed media reports.
The 70-year-old Munshi, who is a freedom fighter and also the founder Managing Director of garment manufacturing company Sepal Group, had shown symptoms of COVID-19, following which he underwent a test, which on Wednesday came back positive, underlined reports.
This was quoted by spokesman of the Commerce Ministry Abdul Latif Bakshi.
As per the Commerce Ministry spokesman, the Commerce Minister was immediately taken to the Evercare Hospital in capital Dhaka and was reported to be physically stable.
It may be mentioned here that the dreaded disease has infected many amongst business and political leaders in the country.
Recently, the State Minister for Religious Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah who was infected with COVID-19 and was admitted in the Combined Military Hospital in the capital Dhaka breathed his last on 14 June, while the Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque was also detected coronavirus positive on 12 June.
As per latest reports, 98,489 people in Bangladesh have so far tested positive for coronavirus, 38,189 recovered from it while 1,305 have reportedly lost their lives to the dreaded disease.
