Bangladesh’s share in the global apparel export market, unlike that of its closest competitor (Vietnam), which remained unchanged in 2019, increased to 6.80 per cent from 6.40 per cent in 2018.
This was underlined by the World Trade Organisation (WTO), which released the World Trade Statistical Review 2020, in Geneva last week.
As per the WTO figures, share of the world’s biggest apparel exporter, China, declined to 30.80 per cent in 2019 from 31.30 per cent in 2018, while Vietnam’s share remained unchanged at 6.20 per cent.
However, Vietnam registered 8.0 per cent annual growth in export in 2019 in comparison to Bangladesh’s 2.0 per cent.
It may be mentioned here that Vietnam’s share in the global clothing export market in 2010 was 2.90 per cent, while that of Bangladesh was 4.20 per cent.
The WTO data also underlined that in 2019, annual export of clothing items from Bangladesh was around US $ 34 billion.
