The BTMA or the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association has denounced rumours centring safety compliance in the textile industry even as the President of the association Mohammad Ali Khokon underlined that some people were spreading rumours about textile mills, capitalising on the recent fire incident at a Narayanganj-based juice production unit.
The BTMA’s media committee chief, Md. Monir Hossain, reportedly, shared the statement of Mohammad Ali Khokon with the press at a programme held at a hotel in capital Dhaka recently.
Expressing deep shock over the death of 52 workers at Hashem Foods factory, where the fire incident took place, the BTMA President, reportedly, maintained that some of the local authorities involved in setting up and monitoring the industrial establishments have been trying to pass the buck regarding the fire even as he stated that ‘BTMA has observed that after the fire incident, a domestic and foreign quarter has been trying to disrupt the prevailing peace and order of the country’s industrial sector with various unsolicited statements…’
Further, calling upon the Government to ensure proper justice through impartial investigation of the fire incident, the BTMA President, reportedly, maintained that authorities concerned were consciously trying to pass the blame from one to another even as he underlined that McKinsey & Company has praised Bangladesh’s apparel sector for its transparency, while Hong Kong-based supply chain compliance solutions provider, QIMA, had recently ranked the country’s garment sector second in ethical manufacturing.
