With the summer setting in, which would push temperatures up, leading to fire incidents caused mostly by electrical disturbances as temperature shoots, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), which is the apex body of Bangladesh apparel makers, has suggested remedial measures to control the same.
This is as per reports, which went on to add that as per data from the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defence (DFSCD), in 2022, 38.48 per cent or 9,275 out of 24,102 fire incidents recorded took place owing to electrical malfunctioning even if in 2021, some 7,955 or 36.82 per cent fire incidents due to electrical issues were recorded.
In a letter signed by BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, the trade body suggested seven preventive measures even as it requested all apparel manufacturing units to ensure regular monitoring of all electrical cables, wiring and other electrical equipment in the respective units by factories by a qualified BSc engineer or a qualified diploma engineer as a preventive measure.
