Even as garment workers in various parts of Bangladesh continue their protest in demand of wage and arrears, information has emerged that 46 readymade garment manufacturing factories, despite repeated requests from the apex garment makers’ body in the country, have failed to disburse workers’ salary for the month of March.
Keeping the same in consideration, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has now recommended the Government to close these 46 errant units down, claimed media reports.
The traders’ body in a letter written to State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian underlined that around 99 per cent of its member factories have paid the wages for March except the 46, all of which now stand the risk of not being considered for the interest-free loan from the stimulus package as they have failed to pay wages for March.
Further, it has also come to light that most of those protesting in the garment manufacturing hubs of Savar, Narayanganj, Ashulia and Narayanganj in the last few days, are workers who are employed in these 46 units.
