At least 10 people, including pedestrians and garment workers, were injured on Wednesday after workers of Diganta Sweaters allegedly vandalised a manufacturing unit in Najore area of Gazipur area, held a sit-in protest blocking the Dhaka-Tangail highway and damaged vehicles on the highway.
As per media reports, the workers of the Diganta Sweater Factory have been demonstrating for the past few days after the factory authorities terminated some workers citing lack of orders which gave rise to apprehensions of job loss amongst the workers.
A garment worker who spoke to the media maintained that the workers had reached an agreement with the factory authorities on the issue already but when they went to work earlier in the morning, they found some machines in the factory vandalised which led them to think that the authorities have done this to frame the workers.
Following this, tensions flared and workers hit the streets and at one point the agitating workers allegedly attacked nearby Coast to Coast factory damaging the factory’s main gate, machines and some computers.
Following the agitation, industrial police and police from Basan police station rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control.
Even though the police have deployed additional personnel to avert any untoward incident, several factories are said to have been closed in the area due to the unrest.
