In a step that is seen by many as an effort to give a boost to Bangladesh’s leather sector, the Government has decided to form a company named Dhaka Tannery Industrial Estate Management Company Limited for the operation of the Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at the Savar Tannery Industrial City.
“The Government will also provide all possible facilities in future for protecting the interests of the industry…,” stated Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun.
The decision to this end was taken at a recent view-exchange meeting with Private Industry and Investment Adviser to the Prime Minister, Salman Fazlur Rahman on Savar Tannery Industrial City at the Industries Ministry.
Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun presided over the meeting that witnessed participation of all the stakeholders related to the tannery industry.
Industries Secretary M. Abdul Halim, Additional Secretary of the Industries Ministry Begum Parag and Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Chairman M. Mostaque Hassan, amongst others attended the meeting.
It may be mentioned here that Bangladesh’s leather and leather products sector is considered to be the most highly potential sector in terms of exports after the readymade garment industry.
