In a bid to reduce dependence on import of yarns, Bangladesh Government has announced that it will make viscose fibre from jute with the help of Chinese technology to make yarn in the state-owned jute mills. Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) and China Textile Industrial Corporation for Foreign Economy and Technical Co-operation signed the agreement regarding the same. According to the agreement, China will provide technical and financial assistance to Bangladesh for the project.
Last year Bangladesh imported 33,737 tonnes of viscose, the market value of which is about BDT 650 crore. Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) Secretary Mansur Ahmed said that 50-60 spinning mills use viscose which is mixed with cotton to manufacture yarn; if produced domestically, the mill-owners will get benefited.
