The proposed digital commerce have given rise to concerns amongst the e-commerce players in Bangladesh, who have expressed apprehensions, once passed, the law will ultimately choke Bangladesh’s nascent online trade instead of enabling its growth potential.
According to reports, the apprehensions were expressed by them at a recent event organised by BASIS or the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services even as they opined the law solely apparently lays emphasis in punishing online sellers, which should have been the opposite as the already existing legislation is enough to regulate the same.
They reportedly further added the e-commerce sector of the country is complying with over a dozen laws even as an equal number of Government bodies are also engaged in regulating/supervising the sector and further highlighted that despite so many laws and authorities, it did not help prevent fraudulent schemes by a small number of market players.
This they reportedly blamed to a lack of enforcement of the regulations.
