In pursuit of higher wages and improved labour laws, thousands of workers in Indonesia staged demonstrations across the country. 35,000 people approximately rallied in several parts of the country, demanding 22 to 25 per cent increase in the minimum wage for 2016 and lower prices on essential goods, including fuel. With 45,000 people of the country’s 1.5 million textile industry workers having already lost their jobs, the unions also want the government to ensure job security and provide the basic rights of workers. The cost of imported yarn and fabrics has been affected by the weak rupiah and the increased tariffs on imports of consumer goods is also feared to increase inflation.
